ENERGY AND ENVIRONMENT

The last report issued by United Nations about the environment shows that the energy consumption  within the industrialized countries, actually coming in large part from the combustion of fossil fuel, is changing the climate of our planet. For this reason, and because fossil fuels are a non-renewable energy source, it is necessary to reduce the consumption of these resources, looking for alternative solutions for  the energy production, using in the meantime the energy at our disposal with a better efficiency.
To further reduce the environmental impact, all the industrialized countries have settled ambitious targets of CO2 emissions reduction.
It is interesting knowing that about the half of the electric energy produced in Europe is used by industries and that the drives are responsible for two-thirds of this energy consumption.
It is equally interesting to know that it doesn’t exist any area of production processes, of automated conveyor systems or of the industrial infrastructures that doesn’t use drives.
Due to the high amount of energy consumed and the wide spectrum of applications, the electric drives represent at the same time the most efficient appeal for the increase of electric efficiency.

ENERGY SAVING

The highest grade of energetic efficiency, with same motor size, can be reached:
- using larger dimensions  of the active parts (increasing  the stator and rotor length; increase of copper in the slot)
- using insulated lamination with fewer losses
According to valuations made by the International Technical Committees, the use of more expensive materials and technologies would surely lead to a higher unit cost of the finished product, that will change depending on the motor size:
- from 10% to 30% passing from IE1 to IE2
- from 10% to 30% passing from IE2 to IE3

THE STANDARDS

1998: In the common agreement between CEMEP – European Committee of Electric Machines  Producers  and  Power  Electronic  –  and  the  European  Commission three efficiency classes have been defined:
EFF3 = low efficiency level motors
EFF2 = standard efficiency level motors
EFF1 = high efficiency level motors
The minimum level, defined for each class in the agreement, is based on the efficiency measures  accordingly to what established in the old regulation EN 60034-2:1996.

2008: International Standard IEC 60034-30/31: 2008

Prepared by the International Electro-technical Commission, related to the need of a global agreement between the several regulations of energetic efficiency for rotating electric machines, the regulation classifies  the  energetic  efficiency  level  for  three-phase single speed cage induction motors, 50 Hz or 60 Hz, using a different efficiency calculation system, as follows:

IE1 - Standard efficiency (comparable to eff2)
IE2 - High efficiency (comparable to eff1 or EPAct’92)
IE3 - Premium efficiency (comparable to EPAct’05)
IE4 - Super premium efficiency (under Project…)

2009: European Standard EC No. 640/2009
Within the UE, it describes/implements the application rules of the European Directive 2005/32/CE regarding the energetic saving, based on the technical documents inside the IEC 60034-30/31.

EUROPEAN STANDARD

Exclusions
a) motors designed to work completely submerged in a liquid
b) motors fully integrated in a product (for example a pump, a fan or a compressor) for which it is not possible to test the energetic performances separately from the product
c) motors specifically designed:
- at more than 1.000 mt. altitude above sea level
- at air temperature lower than -15° or higher than 40 °C
d) motors for intermittent duty (S3) or of limited duration (S2), for which it’s not applied the regulation IEC 60034-30
e) motors for atmosphere potentially explosive (ATEX), as defined in the directive 94/9/CE of European Parliament and Council
f) brake motors
g) double poles motors
h) single-phase motors
Therefore for these categories will still be possible to provide motors with efficiency levels IE1 or lower also after the date of June 16, 2011.

Motovario is thus preparing motors TS [IE1 - Standard efficiency (comparable to eff2) and TH [(IE2 - High efficiency (comparable to or eff1 EPAct'92)].

MAIN FEATURES  TS (standard efficiency)

It 's the basic version with 2, 4, 6 or 8 poles, size 63 to 160S, power ratings from 0.09 kW to 11 kW, including brake motors (TBS series). 2 and 4 pole motors, with rated power bigger or equal then 0.75 kW, rated voltage lower than 1000 V and continuous duty S1 are conformed to IE1 level in accordance with publication IEC 60034-30. As prescribed by IEC 60034-1 and IEC 60034-30 publications, it presents on the nameplate the indication "IE1" and the efficiency value in nominal operating conditions. The efficiency is calculated by the method described in the publication IEC 60034-2-1 (level of uncertainty "average").

- Terminal box cover made in aluminum with MTV brand
- Nameplate with IE1 mark (only for Pmot >= 0,75kW)
- Brake motors TBS with DC FM brake and NBR rectifier (optional rectifier: quick detachment SBR, quick locking RSD, quick detachment/locking RRSD)
- Alternative TBS brake types:
MS (AC brake)
double FM/FM (DC brakes)
parking/progressive ML (DC brake)
- Standard protection degree:
TS = IP55
TBS = IP54
- Optional protection degree:
TS = IP56 - IP65 - IP66
TBS = IP55
- Self-cooling (IC 411) = IP55 with plastic fan
- Forced cooling with same protection degree than electric motor
