Spain: Happy national holiday!
12 October 2022On 12 October each year, Spain celebrates its National Day, officially known as the "Fiesta Nacional de España" (National Day of Spain).
However, this public holiday is also given other names.
The 12 October is also known as the Día del Pilar, because it is the feast day of the Virgen del Pilar, the patron saint of Aragon and the city of Zaragoza; or as "Columbus Day", as it commemorates the arrival of Christopher Columbus in America in 1492.
The celebrations include a military procession that parades along the Paseo de la Castellana in Madrid, with the king and representatives of all the state authorities taking part in the event.
